Petition to the parliament for the declaration to Evoramonte (Portugal) as "National symbol of peace"

The LACE (Evoramonte`s Castle Friends League), the Municipality of Evoramonte and the City Council of Estremoz, put on the gathering of 4000 signatures of Portuguese citizens with the aim of getting the Declaration of Evora Monte as ?National Symbol of Peace?.

04 September 2009

This petition is based on the fact that on the 26th May 1834 a Treaty (Convention) of Peace was signed in the village of  Evoramonte between the parts in conflict which had put an end to the unique but bloody civil war that had occurred in Portugal as an Independent Nation. It also meant that it was the cut with the previous system of government and it opened the door to the Constitutional System.
The supporter institutions think that it is time that the public power must recognize, value and celebrate the places related with  Peace and that it is urgent to communicate and to defend the principles of Peace among the Portuguese citizens.
The gathering of the signatures will be concluded by the beginning of the next legislature.
It is expected that the petition will be handed on the first days of next December.
